Working with the Breath

About this session

The Anima Experience is a 90-minute live session held monthly on Zoom — not a lecture, not a webinar, and not a course.

It's a space to practice.

Each session includes a brief grounding, a short teaching on one practical idea, a guided experiential practice, and structured time for partner reflection and group sharing. The emphasis is on direct experience and genuine connection — not performance, not perfection, and not pushing past what feels right for you.

The Anima Experience is a monthly gathering. Each session stands on its own — you can join at any point and get full value from wherever you are.

This month we’re working with the breath. Most of us have never been taught how we breathe. We’ve been told to take a deep breath, or that breathwork is something that happens in a circle on a retreat. The everyday pattern, the way you breathe all day without thinking about it, rarely gets looked at.

That pattern is doing two things at once. It’s a readout of your nervous system, reporting the state you’re in, often before your thoughts catch up. And it’s a lever on that same system, one of the few you can actually reach and work with directly. Change the breath, and the state tends to follow.

It’s the most accessible doorway into the state work of the last few months, and one of the most overlooked variables in sleep, digestion, anxiety, energy, and the things that run through them.

We’ll also get clear on what working with the breath actually means, because it covers three different things that often get lumped together. Functional breathing, the everyday baseline you can improve on your own. Breathwork, the deliberate, facilitated kind that belongs in a guided container with proper support. And breath as an anchor, the quiet attention practice underneath meditation, and a more accessible doorway in for anyone who has found meditation hard. Knowing which is which, and what each is for, is its own kind of clarity.

This session is where that becomes something you feel in your own body, in real time, rather than something you read about.

We’ll work with the breath directly. Two or three guided practices, depending on how the room is moving. Gentle and capacity-informed, with no catharsis and no forcing. This is closer to functional breathing and breath as an anchor than to intense breathwork. You’ll have time in small groups, and time to land what moves before you go back into your day. You’ll leave with a handout and a daily practice you can use right away.

*Sessions are held on Zoom

**A recording will be available to all registrants until the following session.

What shifts when you start working here.

  • A clearer picture of your own patterns — not as personality or fixed identity, but as adaptations you can feel in your body and begin to understand from the inside
  • Less friction with your own patterns — when you understand that behavior is downstream of state, the self-blame narrative starts to lose its grip and something more useful takes its place.
  • A language for what you’ve been living — words for patterns that have gone unnamed, which is often the first thing that creates room to change.
  • A body that sleeps and digests better — not because you added another protocol, but because the ground those functions run on is less braced and more available.
  • A handout and daily practice to take home — a concrete, simple tool that builds directly on what we explore together in the session.
  • Real co-regulation — not a webinar audience, but people doing the same work in the same room, which is itself part of how nervous system change actually happens.

Reflections from the room

"An invitation with no expectations.

Profoundly accepting — meets us wherever we are at all times. A guide on the side instead of a sage on the stage. No teaching, no preaching. Very simple practices to help us hear our bodies. Zero pressure for any kind of outcome or success measurement. Not just another breath work mindfulness course.”

— Madeleine

"This session was invaluable to me.

It brought out so much from when I was a child. I can’t express it fully, but you helped me so much. Thank you.”

— Diane

"The session yesterday was enlightening and powerful.

I felt heard, seen and validated. I was so emotional that it was a release for my nervous system. Can’t wait until the next one.”

— Michelle

Hi I’m Michael

I created the Anima Experience because I’ve seen how much changes when people practice this work together — rather than just reading about it or doing it alone. Co-regulation, shared presence, and genuine connection aren’t incidental to this work. They’re part of how it works.

I’ve been facilitating this kind of work in trainings, workshops, and retreats for years — but this is the first time I’m bringing it to this community. That means something to me.

I hold these sessions personally, with the same principles that guide everything at Anima: safety, pacing, consent, and respect for individual experience.

This month's session is on June 24th.

Registration closes at session time.
